(Behind the Scenes of COY20)

COY20(20th Conference of Children & Youth)!

Youth Voices on Climate Finance: Exploring Tools, Opportunities, and Global Opportunities for Impact」

Just two more days til COP30 officially begins! 🌍

The TWYCC delegation arrived in Belém, Brazil, a week ago, fully experiencing the Amazon’s unique climate, culture, and boundless heat and hospitality. Our first stop was the global youth gathering — the 20th Conference of Children and Youth (COY20)!

COY20 took place at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), beautifully located along Guamá River. Walking around campus, you can spot “Caution: Animals” signs and see birds freely soaring overhead.  The venue is full of abundant ecology. 🌿

On the second day of COY20, TWYCC hosted a session titled:

“Youth Voices on Climate Finance: Exploring Tools, Opportunities, and Global Opportunities for Impact.”

We presented an overview of the global landscape of climate finance and the role of corporate responsibility. Youth participants from Uzbekistan, Brazil, the U.S., Spain, Colombia, and more joined us in this lively discussion. 🔥

The conversation went far beyond the idea that “there isn’t enough money.” Participants mentioned real implementation challenges from their own perspectives and countries,  such as local communities’ lack of access to funding, government corruption, concentration of funds in large organizations, and the difficulty of applying for and managing available resources.

In summary, participants agreed that climate finance is not just about how funds are distributed, but about power and accessibility. Youth should not only be seen as beneficiaries of funding but as co-creators who help define and decide how funds are used.

Beyond our own session, COY20 was jammed with energy! The opening ceremony featured Impact Zone group discussions, inspiring speeches, and a fire-side chat where participants shared their experiences organizing local COYs around the world. On the 3rd day, COY20 closed with the symbolic delivery of the Global Youth Statement (GYS) to the COP30 Presidency. You can find the link to this year’s GYS at the end of this post.

This year, we observed that COY20 featured many sessions held in Portuguese or with bilingual formats, helping make discussions more accessible for local youth.

Although hosting COY20 on a university campus came with some last-minute changes in schedule and venue (understandable, the campus is huge!), the enthusiasm and creativity of young people from across the globe shone through in every corner. 💥

As COP30 kicks off, TWYCC will continue to bring you daily on-the-ground updates and insights, from negotiation developments to youth actions, we’ve got it all covered! 🌎🔥

Stay tuned and follow along!

See you at COP30 in Belém! 💚
